Your Baby's Development: 2 Month

Parenting Advice

Your 2-month-old is now starting to pay more attention to his/her surroundings and to the people in his/her world. He/she will have established a fairly regular feeding pattern by now.

Baby`s sight: Your baby can follow moving objects and will respond to brightly coloured objects that are dangled over his/her face. He/she can focus on an object up to 8 feet away. Your baby loves to see you smile and will respond with smiles and cooing noises.

Tips: Hang a colourful mobile over his/her crib/cot. Lie him/her/her on his/her back on the floor with a play gym over his/her head he/she will not only love watching the bright objects but will try and raise his/her hands to touch them.

Baby`s hearing: Your baby is fully aware of who you are and knows the different tones in your voice for instance if you raise your voice he/she will respond with a little cry but if you talk to him/her in a soothing voice this will calm and reassure him/her. If he/she hears you across the room he/she will turn his head to follow your voice. Your baby will also get startled by loud noises.

Tips: Be aware of your baby`s reactions to the different tones in your voice and that of others around him/her. Play him/her a variety of music until you find the one that calms him/her or even gets him/her to sleep. This will make life a lot easier for you. Play him/her happy songs or even story tapes you could even introduce some actions to go a long with the song/story.

Body movement: His/her ability to control his/her body posture is improving. His/her head is much more stable and doesn`t lag as much. Makes bicycle movements with legs when lying on his back. He/she will try to hold his/her head when sitting up right. When lying on his/her stomach he/she will try to roll over and will surprise him/herself if he rolls on to his/her back from his/her side.

Finding him/herself

Your baby is already starting to think for him/herself, can recognise familiar surroundings and is settling in to the daily pattern of his/her every day life. These are some of the things that your baby is able to do at 2 months but don`t worry if your baby hasn`t reached these milestones every baby develops at his/her own pace and will catch up.

The grasp reflex still makes him/her hold a rattle firmly, with no intention of giving it back!

He/she steadily holds up his/her head.

Baby rolls over in one direction.

He/she can raise his/her chest using his/her arms for support while lying on his/her stomach.

Baby smiles when you smile at him/her.

He/she responds to loud sounds by becoming completely silent, crying, or acting startled.

Baby coos and will make some vowel sounds such as "ah, eh, oh" in response to what he/she sees and hears around him/her.

He/she focuses on very small objects.

Baby may laugh out loud and even squeal.

Your baby`s feeding and sleeping patterns is starting to become regular and he/she will sleep up to 7 hours at night. Your baby will become irritable, unable to relax and may cry a lot but don`t panic this happens with all baby`s and despite all the research done there is no logical answer as to why.

Here are some of the reasons why your baby might not be settling or crying more then usually:

Colic: Affecting up to 30 percent of babies, colic causes babies to have periods of intense crying-which can occur several times per week and last for several hours. You'll know it when you hear it: Colic elicits sharp cries and screams that aren't relieved by a dry nappy, feeding or cuddling your baby. Colic often gets worse in the evening.

Constipation: Your baby's bowel movements should be soft; if they're hard and dry and resemble little pebbles and are infrequent, your baby may be constipated. Ask your doctor for some help on what you can do to help your baby`s bowels get back to normal.

Intestinal gas (wind): All baby`s get wind and this can cause some slight pain to your baby. This is usually due to not winding your baby properly or from sucking on air from an empty bottle. This is simple to solve. Add one extra scoop of formula on top of his/her regular amount. This will save on him/her sucking on air and you will instantly know when he/she is ready to increase his/her feed.
